Svarnim Puducherry, Sri Aurobindo Society along with VigyanPrasar (Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India), the Deprtment of Science, Technology & Environment, Govt of Puducherry and the Pondicherry Science Forum will be observing the Zero Shadow Day on 21st of August 2021 at the APJ Abdul Kalam Science Centre, Lawspet.
Zero Shadow Day is distinctly different for various places on earth and occurs only twice in a year for a given location as opposed to the common belief that the sun is directly above us at mid-noon every day.
For Puducherry, the latitude is about 11.9 degrees. On August 21st, 2021, the sun’s declination (the angle of the sun’s rays falling on the equator) would be 11.9 degrees, and since the region is inclined at the same angle with respect to the equator, the sun’s rays fall perpendicular at noon, in Puducherry, around 12.14 p.m. (since the region is about 4 degrees to the west of the IST referral point)
There will be a Special Press Meet to be held on 21st August 2021 from 11.00 am onward which will be open for the various Press Representatives to brief about this important phenomenon which is the last event of 2021 (the next zero shadow day being in April 2022 only). The Press Meet and the demonstration of ZSD would be covered in the various online platform as a live event.
The event would be attended by Dr. T.V. Venkateswaran, Scientist F & Head, SciComm Division of Vigyan Prasar (DST, Govt. of India) who would be addressing a Press Meet at 11.00 am at the APJ Abdul Kalam Science Centre with Mr. S. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Director Department of Science, Technology & Environment, Govt. of Puducherry giving the Opening Inaugural Address. Dr. R. Madivanane, Ms.A.Hemavathi – both Vice Presidents of Pondicherry Science Forum, Mr.Raghunath.TP (Director, Svarnim Puducherry, Sri Aurobindo Society), Dr.R.Sagaya Alfred, Senior Scientific Officer, DSTE would also be attending the programme as resource persons.
