Every year, 11 November is observed as Sanskrit Day at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram to commemorate the Mother’s inspiring remarks on Sanskrit in 1967. In her message, she emphasised the living and spiritual essence of the language and encouraged everyone to make it a truly vibrant medium of expression.
This year, AuroBharati, Sri Aurobindo Society, organises a special celebration under the International Sanskrit Study and Research Forum series, featuring two sessions — an onsite workshop and an online lecture — both centred on the timeless significance of Sanskrit.
The morning session, a workshop titled “Devabhasha – A Language of the Divine Origin,” will introduce participants to the beauty of Sanskrit through its phonetics, basic grammar, chanting, metre (chandas), and simple spoken forms. Designed for all age groups, it aims to help learners experience Sanskrit not merely as a subject but as a bridge between the inner and outer dimensions of life.
The evening session features an online lecture by Dr Kishor Kumar Tripathy, Member Secretary, AuroBharati, on Bhavani Bharati: Glory of the Divine Mother as the Essence of the Nation. Written by Sri Aurobindo between 1904 and 1908, Bhavani Bharati—his only Sanskrit poem—celebrates the victory of Shakti, the Mother of the Nation, over ignorance and falsehood.
Through these events, AuroBharati seeks to rekindle the spirit of Sanskrit as a living, conscious language—a true Devabhasha that continues to illuminate India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
“It is of the utmost value to a nation to preserve its language and make of it a living cultural instrument. A nation, race or people which loses its language, cannot live its whole life or its real life.” — Sri Aurobindo
“It would be better to learn Sanskrit and try to make it a truly living language.” — The Mother
