Nocturnal Wildlife Walk

Start Date:20-Oct-2024

End Date:20-Oct-2024

Location:Aranya Forest & Sanctuary

Institute:Svarnim Puducherry

As the sun sets, the Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest (TDEF) transforms into a nocturnal wonder. A diverse array of small creatures emerge to claim the night. Beneath the canopy, a hidden world teems with life – from the elusive pangolin and honey badger to the more common porcupines, hedgehogs and mongooses. Even the iconic black buck and chital have been spotted in certain areas. The forest also serves as a sanctuary for reptiles, including the impressive monitor lizard, the camouflaged chameleon, and a variety of snakes, both venomous and non-venomous. As darkness envelops the TDEF, the air fills with the sounds of nocturnal birds and bats. And beneath the leaf litter, a microcosm of insects and other tiny creatures play a vital role in maintaining the forest's delicate balance.

This guided walk by reptile expert Kishore Kumar will introduce you to a whole new side of nature. With headlamps lighting the way, we’ll spot nocturnal creatures, listen to the sounds of the night.

Kishore Kumar is a naturalist and wildlife conservationist native to Pondichery, working with local tribal communities such as the Narikuravar and the Irular. The traditional livelihoods of the Irular rely on direct subsistence from nature, utilising skills in snake catching, rat hunting, and medicinal plants. He is currently engaged in the creation of snake workshops and nature walks in collaboration with members of the Irular tribe.
