The fourth edition of the Puducherry Bird Atlas, as reported in The Hindu e-newspaper, documents approximately 43,000 birds belonging to 158 species. The publication highlights the rich avian biodiversity of Puducherry and underscores the importance of systematic bird monitoring in understanding bird populations and their habitats.
The findings emphasise the ecological significance of local wetlands, water bodies and other natural habitats that support diverse bird species. The Bird Atlas serves as a valuable resource for researchers, bird enthusiasts and conservationists, helping strengthen biodiversity documentation, habitat protection
and awareness of the need to conserve Puducherry’s natural ecosystems.
This event brought together 54 participants, including experienced birdwatchers from across India, local school and college students, and community volunteers. The teams covered 68 survey grids and submitted 300 standardised checklists through the eBird platform.
