Government Approval and Restoration Work

SVARNIM received approval from the Government of Tamil Nadu for its pond desiltation project, marking an important step forward for water-body restoration in the region. Following this approval, restoration work was initiated at Ozhindhiapet and Vilvanatham villages, where silt accumulation and neglect had reduced the water-holding capacity of local ponds over the years. The government’s endorsement lends institutional support to SVARNIM’s ongoing efforts and paves the way for restoration to be scaled up across more villages in the coming months.

Pond Desiltation Activities in Bahour

As part of ongoing efforts towards water-body restoration and conservation, SVARNIM undertook desiltation activities across three ponds in Bahour — Nadukulam, Thamaraikulam, and Vannankulam. Excavators were deployed on site to remove accumulated silt, debris, and overgrowth, restoring the ponds’ depth and capacity to hold water. Field visits captured the extent of siltation and stagnation in the ponds prior to restoration, with visible algae cover and reduced water levels underscoring the urgency of the intervention. The desiltation work is expected to improve groundwater recharge, support local agriculture, and revive the ecological health of these water bodies.

CEPA Workshop at Vilvanatham Village

SVARNIM conducted a Community Environmental Protection and Awareness (CEPA) Workshop at Vilvanatham village to promote active community participation in environmental conservation. The workshop engaged villagers in discussions on the importance of protecting local water bodies, encouraging them to take ownership of conservation efforts and sustain the benefits of the restoration work being carried out in their village.
