End Date:07-May-2025

Location:Central Prison, Kalapet, Puducherry

As part of its ongoing efforts to foster awareness and emotional well-being among prison inmates and staff, the Auro Model Prison Project, in collaboration with Maatram and Yuvabe from Auroville, organised a theatre performance on 7th May 2025 at Central Prison, Kalapet.

The play addressed key societal issues such as gender bias, women empowerment, and social stigmas, using the medium of storytelling to create awareness and promote societal transformation. The performance was set in a rural household and revolved around the theme of girl child education, while also shedding light on the psychological effects of social conditioning, including perversions and suicidal tendencies. Through a powerful and realistic portrayal, the actors highlighted how education and awareness can help overcome these challenges.

The team, which included two musicians, used innovative and traditional musical instruments to enhance the performance, adding a culturally rooted and engaging layer to the presentation. The effort and execution by the Maatram and Yuvabe teams were widely appreciated by both the inmates, including undertrials, and the jail staff. The programme was graced and supported by the Superintendent of Jail, who expressed appreciation for the initiative.

This theatre performance marks another small yet significant step in the collaborative reformation efforts between Sri Aurobindo Society and Auroville at the Central Prison.

We gratefully acknowledge Smt. Saloni and family from Delhi for sponsoring refreshments for the performing artists from Auroville.
