On 21st November 2024, the inaugural episode of the AVYAY Awareness Program was successfully launched on Pudiya Udayam 91.2 Community Radio Station (PU CRS) at the Satyam Community Centre in Puducherry. This initiative, part of the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, aims to enhance elderly welfare by promoting awareness about government schemes related to health, financial support, and legal rights.

PU CRS is one of the 24 community radio stations chosen by the Community Radio Association (CRA) to implement this program. As per the agreement between CRA and PU CRS, the station will produce and broadcast 24 new episodes, 24 repeat episodes, and 10 narrowcasting sessions to ensure widespread engagement with senior citizens. These programs, approved by CRA, aim to connect the elderly with crucial welfare schemes through relatable and practical content.

The launch included a training session for volunteers tasked with promoting active listenership among the elderly, especially in vulnerable and underserved communities. Volunteers were briefed on the program’s schedule, content themes, and their role in encouraging participation. They were equipped with effective communication strategies, such as organizing listening groups, providing feedback, and fostering engagement.

This initiative recognizes the potential of community radio as a powerful medium to inform, empower, and connect senior citizens. Volunteers worked enthusiastically to create awareness, ensuring that the elderly not only access these broadcasts but also feel valued and supported. By bridging the information gap and combating loneliness, the program fosters a sense of community and belonging among senior citizens.

The AVYAY Awareness Program’s successful launch marks a significant milestone in using community-driven initiatives to address the needs of the elderly, demonstrating how local media can be a catalyst for social change. With weekly episodes and sustained volunteer efforts, PU CRS is committed to creating a lasting impact, empowering senior citizens, and ensuring their well-being in their golden years.
