On 1 November 2024, SARVAM’s Children Corner students brought festive joy to over 150 vulnerable elderly individuals living alone across 15 villages, marking a heart-warming celebration of Deepavali. In an initiative aimed at bridging generations and fostering community connections, 450 students were organised into 45 groups, each consisting of ten children, who set out to visit elderly villagers’ homes. The students shared traditional Deepavali treats, including sweets and sparklers, and spent meaningful time with the seniors, spreading warmth, joy, and companionship.

During each visit, the students engaged in activities with the elderly, such as playing games, sharing stories, and celebrating with festive crackers. These moments provided much-needed interaction for the elderly, who often experience isolation and a lack of social contact. Through their visit, the children conveyed a sense of care and connection, reminding the seniors that they are valued and remembered, especially during the festival season.

The elderly residents were deeply moved by the children’s gestures and showed their gratitude with heartfelt blessings and, in some cases, tears of joy. The students’ efforts not only enlivened the day but also underscored the spirit of

Deepavali as a festival of light and togetherness that transcends generations. Through this initiative, the children demonstrated the importance of empathy and the profound impact of small acts of kindness, making the celebration an unforgettable experience for both the young and the elderly.

This event, organised by SARVAM in Puducherry, showcased the power of community support and compassion. The intergenerational bond created during this celebration of Deepavali highlights how sharing joy across generations can make festivals more meaningful and impactful for everyone involved.
