Start Date:25-Oct-2024

End Date:28-Oct-2024

Location:15 different village centres

Institute:SARVAM, Puducherry

Between 25th and 28th October 2024, the Women Care Circle, an initiative supported by SARVAM, Puducherry, brought Deepavali joy to elderly villagers across 15 communities. Comprising around 100 dedicated volunteers, this group has been regularly working to support seniors by offering companionship and care. As Deepavali approached, the volunteers organised a special initiative to make the festival meaningful for elderly community members. They aimed to brighten the holiday for 200 seniors by providing them with nourishing meals, personal care, and heartfelt companionship.

Each group of volunteers conducted a surprise one-day visit to seniors' homes, with each team covering around 10-13 households within their assigned village. In preparation, volunteers cooked full meals, including traditional sweets, snacks, porridge, and fruits, ensuring the seniors could enjoy a festive meal. Beyond serving food, the volunteers engaged in hands-on support, assisting the seniors with household tasks, bathing, providing fresh clothes, and participating in playful activities to lift their spirits. This initiative allowed the elderly to enjoy meaningful social interaction, feel cherished, and experience the festival's joy within their homes.

The volunteers covered all expenses themselves and expressed their gratitude to SARVAM for supporting such a valuable cause. The experience left a profound impact on both the seniors, who expressed immense gratitude, and the volunteers, who were deeply moved by the joy their efforts brought. Inspired by this event, other community members have shown interest in joining the Women Care Circle, strengthening this initiative and expanding the support network for seniors in need across more villages.

This Deepavali initiative demonstrated the Women Care Circle’s dedication to building compassionate communities and fostering genuine bonds, helping to alleviate the loneliness often faced by elderly villagers.
