On 24th September 2024, SARVAM conducted a meaningful programme aimed at strengthening family bonds across generations in one of their project villages in Puducherry. This initiative sought to enhance communication, trust, and the emotional connection between family members, fostering a resilient family unit that could better face challenges together. Over time, such strengthened relationships create a lasting legacy of healthy connections for future generations.
The programme began with a solemn prayer, setting a peaceful tone for the day. Twenty participants attended, consisting of ten grandmothers and their ten grandchildren, creating a special environment focused on intergenerational bonding. A brief introduction was given, explaining the purpose of the programme: to encourage closer connections between the elderly and the young through shared activities and experiences.
One of the highlights of the event was a touching story shared by a student named Jayasree. She recounted a cherished tale passed down by her grandmother, expressing how these stories enriched their bond with love and wisdom. This exchange of values and experiences was at the heart of the programme's mission—honouring the flow of knowledge between generations.
Various engaging activities were designed to deepen the bond between the grandmothers and grandchildren. The most enjoyable and creative part of the day was a fingerprint painting activity. Grandmothers and grandchildren worked together to select vibrant colours, symbolising their happiness, and created handprints. The grandmothers encouraged their grandchildren in choosing the colours, enhancing their connection through a shared artistic expression. This activity brought joy to all, culminating in a memorable moment when each grandchild crowned their grandmother and lovingly declared, "My grandmother is a queen." The sight filled the room with smiles and warmth.
As the programme concluded, participants shared their feedback and expressed deep gratitude to SARVAM and the Sri Aurobindo Society for organising such a heart-warming event. They appreciated the time spent bonding with their grandchildren and thanked the coordinators from Perambai and Vazhapatam Palayam for making the event possible. The day ended with a moment of silence in prayer, followed by a group photo capturing the joy and togetherness experienced by all.
