On 30th August 2024, a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme was conducted at the Satyam Community Centre by SARVAM, in collaboration with CPCL. The training focused on equipping volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to manage depression in elderly and vulnerable individuals within village communities.
Depression, often more severe than ordinary sadness, can significantly impair an individual's ability to function in daily life. The training highlighted the importance of recognizing symptoms such as persistent hopelessness, anxiety, irritability, guilt, and a loss of interest in daily activities. Physical symptoms, including headaches, digestive issues, and suicidal thoughts, were also discussed.
Volunteers participated in group exercises to better understand how depression affects mood and behaviour, such as restlessness, anger, impulsivity, and social withdrawal. They also learned practical ways to engage the elderly in activities that could help alleviate their depressive symptoms. The training emphasized the importance of support, tolerance, and encouragement, as well as the role of companionship in improving the well-being of depressed individuals.
Participants left the session motivated to bring hope and joy to the lives of the elderly, aiming to help them overcome depression through compassionate care and active engagement.
