Start Date:29-Sep-2022

End Date:01-Oct-2022

Location:12 Villages in and around Poothurai

Institute:SARVAM

SARVAM villages observed international heart day with programs promoting awareness about the importance of a healthy heart and preventing diseases.

International heart day was observed in the villages where SARVAM works since health and nutrition are the main objectives this year.

World Heart Day was created in order to raise awareness of the heart disease that kills over 17 million people annually.

On 29th September, World Heart Day is observed and celebrated worldwide to increase awareness about cardiovascular diseases and ways to reduce their global impact.

In the SARVAM villages, activities were carried out from 29th September to 1st October.  Almost all the awareness programs stimulate women to focus on their hearts and the importance of taking care of them.  The children were involved in activities that taught them about their hearts and the importance of caring for them.

The project team conducted various awareness programs, group discussions, and drawing activities, primarily focusing on women, the elderly, and children.  More than 300 women, 200 vulnerable people, and 500 children participated in these programs.

In the awareness program, people were informed that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy eating habits, and physical inactivity, at least 80% of premature heart disease and stroke deaths could be avoided.

Healthy, nutritious, and affordable foods that can improve the heart's health are also discussed.  A discussion of how fruits and vegetables, like any other plant-based food, contain substances that may help prevent cardiovascular disease were also included.

The community members were also informed that obesity, inactivity, unhealthy diets, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose contribute to heart disease.

The participants promised to follow a healthy lifestyle at the end of the program.
